Artist Statement

In my work I use the traditional formal qualities of objects along with their endless conceptual interpretations to contrast the process with an idea. The work allows the viewer to make their own connections through the images that relate to their memories and personal experiences.
This body of work incorporates various printmaking, mixed media and ceramic techniques that express my personal experiences. I am discovering a visual language that includes a combination of objects, surface and color. I juxtaposed objects and imagery to make the work more quizzical, evocative and contemplative. I use common objects like a doily or a toy from my childhood that are personal and reflective to me. I also include imagery of antiques and architecture that I am drawn to for their historical and emotive qualities. These objects and images are significant because of my connection to them, but also because of the personal memories they evoke.
The doily symbolizes a time in my childhood when I would retreat to a small end table in the family room. This table was topped with a crocheted cotton tablecloth that provided enough cover to hide behind, but also allow me to see the world through the patterned holes. This was a space that would allow me to escape and create a reality that was my own. The work becomes a lens for the viewer to create their own narrative much like the doily did for me.
